SAFe in Government Programs

Federal, regional, and local governments have a mandate from the public to spend money on software and systems in the most cost efficient manner possible. As a result, many have found their way to SAFe and are reporting gains in both productivity and costs savings. Some even exceeding the outstanding gains reported in the commercial sector. This track will explore strategies for adopting SAFe in government, highlight some successful case studies, and bring focus to critical topics including:

  • Acquiring solutions with Agile contracting
  • Multi-vendor teams and programs
  • Governance
  • Auditing
  • Earned value management

SAFe Lean Portfolio Management

It’s quite an accomplishment for an organization to have implemented SAFe across a set of value streams and Agile Release Trains (ARTs). The success of these ARTs and value streams creates a buzz in the enterprise about the new and better way of working. However, team- and program-level agility can only take you so far. Now is the time to shed the legacy portfolio management practices that impede enterprise agility. This track will explore adopting Portfolio SAFe, implementing a Lean Portfolio Management function, and bring focus to key topics such as:

  • Strategy and investment funding, Lean governance, and portfolio operations
  • Developing strategic themes that create alignment between strategy and execution
  • Applying Lean startup techniques and Innovation Accounting
  • Lean budgeting, forecasting, and contracting
  • Advancing solution behavior with epic-level initiatives
  • Managing the flow of enterprise initiatives
  • Aligning portfolio demand to implementation capacity

Technical Practices

Using Lean-Agile principles, developers have evolved technical practices to improve the defining, building, deploying, and releasing of solutions. This track explores the wide range of technical practices that help deliver solutions faster, more predictably, and with higher quality. Topics include:

  • DevOps and automating the Continuous Delivery Pipeline
  • Software Engineering, including how developers apply XP technical practices, Hypothesis Driven Development (HDD), Behavioral-Driven Development (BDD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), and Agile testing
  • Architecture, including the larger solution context of emergent architecture and intention design

Leadership and Agile HR

SAFe implementations rely on Lean-Agile leaders who drive Lean and Agile mindsets and SAFe principles. This track explores the different ways leaders can drive success, empowering and coaching individuals, teams, programs, and the portfolio. Agile HR enables leaders to implement the practices which drive employee engagement and team collaboration required in a Lean enterprise.

SAFe Roles

Today’s knowledge workers shape their careers by accessing knowledge resources, attending learning sessions, and building networks that reflect their personal desires and goals.

SAFe encourages this personal growth by providing a comprehensive role-based curriculum and a certification program that supports an individual’s learning journey. The SAFe Roles track takes a deeper dive into the roles, tools and practices around SAFe and how they contribute to an individual’s growth. In addition to learning about these practices, attendees can share their experience with others and learn valuable lessons on applying from the field.

SAFe Applied

This track embraces the spirit that we can learn from each other. The extended SAFe community has immense experience and lessons learned applying Lean-Agile principles and practices using the Scaled Agile Framework. These sessions present some of those unique experiences, which may include unique ways of applying SAFe, lessons learned from enterprise transformations, and other stories from the trenches of SAFe adoption.
